Variante del excursionismo en que se lleva ropa, comida y equipo de camping en una mochila.

A principios del s. XX, el backpack era principalmente un medio para llegar a zonas deshabitadas, inaccesibles en auto o en una caminata de un día. Posteriormente, sin embargo, el nombre pasó a denominar en general el recorrido a pie de zonas rurales y urbanas. Se usan distintos tipos de mochila, desde el bolso sin armazón hasta aquellas con un marco de tubos de aluminio, que suelen llevar una pretina que transfiere la mayor parte del peso a las caderas.
